THANGKA PAINTING

HelloFriends,
It is almost going to be a year since I posted.Though I did some recycling work.couldn't find anything worth to post.I am drawn towards many arts and crafts but the real satisfaction and happiness is felt  only while doing painting of deities, that I realised now, hope to do more painting than those decoupages, scrapbooking, recyclings.

Today I will be sharing my new work "Thangka painting" which was in my "to do list" for the past few years.I am feeling happy that I could able to finish it.Let me give you a brief history about it .

Thangka is a unique art form that belongs to Tibetan culture. In Tibetan the word 'than' means Flat and the suffix 'ka' stands for Painting. The Thangka is thus a kind of painting done on flat surface but which can be rolled up when not required for display.

Thangka signifies iconographic information in a symbolic manner. The paintings are a picture panel used for worshipping and decorating houses. The traditional art is made on cotton or silk cloth representing Buddha and other deities . The unique art is originated during lord Buddha’s time. Every painting communicates a message and teaching about the represented deity.

Thangka is also known as scroll painting.

Here I have tried "Green Tara"Thangka on a canvas board using acrylic paints and gold dust powder.

Green Tara
Green Tara is the most famous female Buddha in the Tibetan Buddhist pantheon. She is also known as ‘Mother of all Buddhas’ and is regarded the female manifestation of active compassion.
Green Tara stretches out her right foot and is therefore ready to step down and help all who call out for her or recite her mantra. She reaches out to grant all wishes and there are many stories of people that were saved from difficulties or fears when calling her name.

The story goes like this, she was a very devoted girl who used to pray for hours and making extensive offerings to the Buddhas. But when other male, practitioners noticed her capacity they told her this was all useless unless she would pray for a next incarnation in a male body, as this would be the only way to reach enlightenment.
But Green Tara had the deep insight that ‘female’ or ‘male’ are just labels we put on things and therefore she made the following adamantine vow:
‘Until Samsara is empty, I shall work for the benefit of all sentient beings in a woman’s body.’
Thus she did, she became one of the first enlightened women.
Here, Green Tara wears the elaborate crown and jewels of a Bodhisattva. Furthermore, Green Tara is known as the “liberator” and she wishes for devotees to be free from all obstacles. She is also known as a feminist and she has refused to be reincarnated as a male.
When I read this story I was more inspired to try this subject as there are numerous taras, buddhas and  other subjects available in the net.I was more drawn towards  to this Great Tara".
Though the procedures to make a "Thangka" is laborious and time consuming you can always try and explore many mediums which are easily available. That'swhat I did.Hope this post inspires you to try .

Wish you all a merry "Xmas" and meet you all soon in my next post in 2019
